Complete guide to cabins and suite on Atlas Ocean Voyages cruise ships

Windstar's newly stretched yachts have more restaurant choices, and their sailing ships offer a unique experience. Small-ship cruise line SeaDream also attracts a more luxury minded Champagne and caviar clientele. One advantage that Atlas has over both, however, is that their ships are newer -- and again, the bathrooms onboard are hard to beat. We at Cruise Critic have found that expedition lines often suffer during the off-season, when their small ships -- polar classed and built for adventure -- sail into more traditional ports. They often charge premium prices for an experience that isn't all that different or special from what a regular (and cheaper) cruise line provides.

Featured Expeditions

Atlas is using some or all of them on many itineraries to house the ship's expedition guides and entertainers. AOV's Epicurean Expeditions (scheduled for the period May thru Ocotber 2023) introduced the open-air dining concept "Alma Alfresco" on the ships World Navigator and World Traveller. Among the dishes are Polvo a Lagareiro (octopus, potatoes, olive oil, roasted garlic), Alheira de Mirandela (sausage, potatoes, radish greens), Torta de Azeitao (roll cake with egg custard cream). The last luxury cruise brand of note to start operations was Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours.

Atlas Ocean Voyages Ships

AOV-Atlas Ocean Voyages (AtlasOceanVoyages.com) is a new expedition cruise travel brand and a fully owned subsidiary of Mystic Invest SGPS SA (shipowner). The parent company is the Ferreira family-owned Portuguese financial holding with brands mainly in the travel tourism and leisure industries. The dining options on World Navigator will be diverse for a ship that carries fewer than 200 people. Counting in-room dining and an afternoon tea service in one of the lounges, there are six food-related concepts.

"I don't want to be nickel and dimed," one passenger told me -- and while Atlas doesn't have some of the extras of a true luxury line like Seabourn or Silversea, you do get quite a bit for what you're paying. Expedition cruises, generally attract seasoned, adventurous travelers in their 50s, 60s or 70s. Travelers on my sailing ranged from their 30s to 70s and 80s and included a diverse range of ethnicities, nationalities and LBGTQ passengers.

Atlas allows passengers to bring their own alcohol onto ships, typically with a corkage fee. Wine, beer, spirits and cocktails of all kinds are available onboard at no extra charge, as drinks are included in the fare. As is typical for lines specializing in small ships and expedition ships, Atlas does not offer specific children's programs on its vessels or provide child care on board. World Navigator features a relatively large deck-top pool area — something you don't always find on a ship carrying fewer than 200 passengers. It's home to a pool, two hot tubs, rows of lounge chairs and a pool grill and bar. At the same time, Atlas will be taking the rest of the oceanview cabins on World Navigator out of its booking pool, leaving it as an all-balcony-and-suite vessel.

A big part of Atlas's focus will be on getting customers to remote destinations. Room service is available from the "always available" menu as part of the all-inclusive amenities. In the case of the single Veranda Deluxe cabin, this sitting area features two portholes overlooking the back of a lifeboat — a feature that gives the room an unusual, ocean liner-of-old flair. The world's newest cruise line, Atlas Ocean Voyages, is all about retro-chic elegance when it comes to its onboard accommodations.

About Atlas Ocean Voyages Cruises

The spacious and stylish interior design by Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec of Portugal's architecture and design firm, Oitoemponto, is like what you'd find on a superyacht or in a coastal vacation home. The Veranda Deluxe and Horizon Deluxe cabins are located adjacent to the two spaces that house World Navigator's two lifeboats and have unusual layouts with small sitting rooms that are carved out of space directly behind the lifeboats. When Atlas Ocean Voyages debuted in 2021, the small ship cruise line didn't seem to be able to tell people exactly what kind of experience they were going to have. As the most discerning, up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel, Condé Nast Traveler is the global citizen’s bible and muse, offering both inspiration and vital intel. We understand that time is the greatest luxury, which is why Condé Nast Traveler mines its network of experts and influencers so that you never waste a meal, a drink, or a hotel stay wherever you are in the world. The L’Occitane SeaSpa, the French brand’s first-ever spa at sea, has two treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, and an infrared sauna.

Onboard amenities include a L'Occitane spa with two treatment rooms and a sauna; upscale restaurants serving regionally influenced gourmet fare; and a deck-top pool area — something you don't always find on an expedition ship. Built to be tough and versatile, it has a polar-class rating that will allow it to travel deep into the Arctic and to Antarctica as well as warmer-water locales. It carries Zodiac boats for landings in remote places and will sail with expedition guides to lead explorations. Atlas Ocean Voyages, a new "luxe adventure" line based in Fort Lauderdale that's been under development for several years, finally kicks off its first sailing with paying passengers today with a Greek Islands voyage out of Piraeus, Greece. Also, the ship offers an environment of inclusivity where everyone will feel comfortable, including those identifying as LGBTQ+, people of color, and others. Everyone was friendly, warm, and welcoming, from the passengers to the crew.

Whether looking out into the city’s waterways, ancient castles or modern buildings, you’ll always have a great view when cruising to Stockholm, Sweden. The cruise port of Montevideo, Uruguay is a multifaceted destination with a vibrant culture, and a well-known hub for technological advancement. The cruise port of Helsingborg, one of the oldest cities of what is now Sweden, is a small and quaint town sitting on the shores of the Oresund, the four mile narrow strait connecting Sweden and Denmark. Discover imaginative architecture, impressive Spanish dishes and beautiful excursions into nature when you cruise to Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. Venture into some of the northernmost points in the world to discover traditional villages, the elusive polar bears and more in the Arctic with Atlas Ocean Voyages. Learn more about how you can stay fit and truly pamper yourself at the Sea Spa by L’Occitane onboard every Atlas Ocean Voyages ship.

If you're traveling to Antarctica (as I did), you’ll have private charter jet service from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, where you and your fellow passengers will then travel by motor coach to the ship. Guests can also book airfare and pre- and post-cruise land packages through Atlas that include some transfers, depending on the program selected. Our yachts are Polar Category C- and Ice Class 1B-certified, made to explore both the icy waters of Antarctica and warm seas of the Mediterranean.

The 7 Aft grill makes outstanding burgers during the afternoon, and there's an always available, serve yourself gelato cart that's perfect on sunny days. It's been hit or miss, although as the Med season chefs have gotten their groove, the quality does seem to improve by the day. We overheard the guest chefs saying that they spent time in the galley answering questions and helping out, although that claim could come with a touch of braggadocio.

There are also benches, a restroom and plenty of crew at the ready to help you get suited up. PATAGONIA WILDLIFE – From the Magellanic woodpeckers of the forests to the penguin colony of Martillo Island, Tierra del Fuego National Park offers nature lovers a delightful slice of Patagonia wildlife. HIKING – Follow the Hito XXIV Trail along the shores of Lago Roca, reaching Milestone 24 demarking where Argentina and Chile meet. Or take the shorter path of Sendero Paseo de la Isla Trail around the small fjord of Lapataia Bay, abundant in geese, diving petrels, ducks and black-browed albatrosses. Senda Costera (the Coastal Path) is another hiking option that takes you through scenic views of the Beagle Channel, first discovered on an expedition that included the famous naturalist Charles Darwin.

Most of the ports are smaller than where you'd stop on a larger cruise ship, making the entire itinerary feel more boutique. Our sailing embarked in Nice, as opposed to the larger cities of Marseilles or the prinicipalty of Monaco. The only time we saw other large cruise ships was in Livorno, the port for Florence and Pisa.

World Navigator also has a cafe on its main public deck called Paula's Pantry that serves up espresso drinks, pastries and some heartier grab-and-go items (including soup and sandwiches that are available from late morning through the early evening). As is typical for small cruise vessels, World Navigator has just a handful of dining options. The suites on the ship (there are 10) range in size from 382 to 465 square feet. But it already has four more ships on order from a shipyard in Portugal for delivery over the next three years. By 2024, it should be a five-ship brand, and there's already talk about an order for a sixth vessel.

If you're sure you know what sort of cabin you want on World Navigator and on which specific itinerary, you can head over to AtlasOceanVoyages.com to make a booking directly. Alberto Aliberti, the line's president, recently told TPG that they're expecting a core audience in the 50-something to 60-something age range, with the typical passenger being someone who is looking for an upscale, active experience that isn't too formal.
